RTP Explained
What the Number Means

The most quoted number in slots and the most misread. Here is what it actually describes.

Definition

What RTP is

Return to player is the share of total wagered money a slot returns across an extremely large number of spins. A 96% RTP game returns about 96 units for every 100 wagered — measured over millions of spins, across all players, not within your session.

The remainder is the house edge. On a 96% RTP game that is 4%, and over enough spins it is the only quantity that accumulates reliably.

Misreadings

What RTP does not mean

✗
Not a session forecast. Your hour has almost no relationship to the long-run figure.
✗
Not a loss limit. A 96% RTP game can take your whole budget, and often does.
✗
Not adjustable. No tool, app, bonus or strategy changes a game’s RTP.
✓
Useful for comparison. Between two games you enjoy equally, the higher RTP is the better bet.

Volatility

RTP is only half the picture

Two games with identical RTP can feel completely different. Volatility describes how lumpy the return is: high-volatility games pay rarely and large, low-volatility games pay often and small.

For scatter-driven games volatility is usually high by design, because the return is concentrated in the bonus round. Volatility explained covers this in detail.

Honest

Why we do not publish per-game RTP

Scatter Meter does not list RTP figures per game. We hold live jackpot pool data from provider APIs; we do not hold verified RTP values, and publishing unverified ones on pages people use to decide where to spend money would be worse than publishing nothing.

The authoritative source for any game’s RTP is its own paytable or help screen, inside the game. methodology sets out what our data does cover.
