What Is a
Scatter Symbol?
The short answer, then the detail: what makes a scatter different from every other symbol on the reels, and why it is the one players actually wait for.
The Answer
A scatter symbol in one paragraph
A scatter symbol is a slot symbol that pays or triggers a bonus feature based on how many land anywhere on the reels, rather than whether they line up on a payline. Three scatters scattered across three separate reels will usually trigger a bonus; three ordinary symbols in the same positions pay nothing. That single rule is what makes scatters the most valuable symbol in most games.
Mechanics
Why paylines do not apply
A normal slot win is read left to right along a fixed path. The game checks each active payline, sees whether matching symbols sit on consecutive reels along it, and pays if they do. Position matters absolutely: the right symbols in the wrong places pay nothing.
Scatters are evaluated separately, before and outside that check. The game simply counts how many scatters are visible anywhere on the screen. If the count meets the threshold, the feature fires. This is why you will see a bonus trigger from symbols sitting in what looks like a hopeless arrangement.
A second difference follows from the first: scatter prizes are normally multiplied by your total bet, not the line bet. On a game with 20 lines, that is a meaningful distinction and it is stated in the paytable.

In Practice
What this means when you play
Knowing the rule changes what you watch. Players new to slots track paylines and feel cheated by near-misses; players who understand scatters watch the count instead, because that is the number that actually opens the feature.
It also explains why scatter meters exist at all. No meter predicts a spin — slot outcomes come from a random number generator and every spin is independent of the last. how slot RNG works explains the mechanism, and methodology sets out exactly what our readings do and do not show.
