The Feature

Scatter Free Spins
How the Round Actually Works

Free spins are where most of a scatter slot’s return is held. Here is what triggers them, what they award, and what the retrigger rules usually are.

Trigger

What opens the round

Three or more scatter symbols landing anywhere on the reels is the standard trigger. The exact count varies: some games need three, some four, and a few scale the award by how many landed — three scatters might award eight spins where five scatters award twenty.

Because scatters ignore paylines, the trigger can fire from an arrangement that looks like nothing. That is the defining property of the symbol and the reason the feature exists in this form. The scatter symbol explained covers the mechanic in detail.

Inside

What the round usually awards

A fixed number of spins
Typically 8 to 15, awarded at the triggering bet. You cannot change stake mid-feature.
A multiplier
Often rising through the round, sometimes resetting on a miss. This is where the large outcomes come from.
Modified reels
Expanded symbols, removed low-value symbols, or extra wilds, making the feature reels materially different from the base game.
Retriggers
Landing scatters again during the round adds more spins, sometimes at a lower threshold than the original trigger.

Value

Why the bonus holds most of the return

Game designers distribute a slot’s return to player deliberately. In scatter-driven games, a large share is placed inside the free spin round rather than the base game. This produces the familiar pattern: long flat stretches, then a disproportionate swing.

It also means base-game play on a high-volatility scatter slot will usually feel worse than the headline RTP suggests, because you are effectively paying in during the base game for value that is only released in the feature.

Feature buy options, where offered, let you pay directly for the round. They do not improve your odds — the price is set from the feature’s expected value — they change the pacing and concentrate the variance.

Meters

What a meter says about free spins

No meter predicts a spin — slot outcomes come from a random number generator and every spin is independent of the last. how slot RNG works explains the mechanism, and methodology sets out exactly what our readings do and do not show.

What a reading does show is the current pool state and how it has moved, which is useful for comparing games. The slot jackpot monitor covers 814 titles across 15 providers.
