Payouts

How Scatter Pays
Are Actually Calculated

Scatter payouts follow different rules to line wins, and the difference changes what your bet size actually buys.

The Rule

Total bet, not line bet

A payline win pays a multiple of the line bet — the amount staked on that single line. A scatter pay almost always pays a multiple of your total bet, the full amount staked across the spin.

On a 20-line game at ₱1 per line, the line bet is ₱1 and the total bet is ₱20. A 5x line win pays ₱5. A 5x scatter pay pays ₱100. Same multiplier, twenty times the result, and the paytable states which applies to each symbol.

This is why scatter pays look disproportionately large relative to their multipliers, and why comparing a scatter multiplier to a line multiplier directly is misleading.

Counting

How the count is evaluated

✓
Position is irrelevant. The game counts scatters visible anywhere on the screen, before and outside the payline check.
✓
Only one scatter per reel counts, usually. Many games place a maximum of one scatter per reel, so the count is capped at the reel count.
✓
More scatters often means more than a bigger prize. Many games scale the free spin award to the trigger count as well as paying more.
✗
Wilds generally do not help. Most games block wild substitution for scatters, because allowing it would break the trigger frequency.

Variants

Where the rules differ

Cluster pays games
Wins are formed by adjacent groups rather than lines. Scatters still count by quantity anywhere, so the distinction persists.
Ways-to-win games
Hundreds or thousands of ways replace fixed lines, but the scatter rule is unchanged: count anywhere, pay on total bet.
Trigger-only scatters
Many games award no direct scatter prize at all. The scatter exists purely to open the feature.
Collection scatters
Accumulate across spins toward a target rather than paying per spin.

Reading

What this means for meters

Scatter pay rules are fixed by the provider and visible in the paytable. A meter cannot change them or predict when they fire. No meter predicts a spin — slot outcomes come from a random number generator and every spin is independent of the last. how slot RNG works explains the mechanism, and methodology sets out exactly what our readings do and do not show.
