Scatter vs Wild
Two Symbols, Opposite Jobs
The two special symbols players mix up most. One starts something new, the other finishes what you already have.
Short Answer
The difference in one line
A scatter triggers. A wild substitutes. A scatter counts anywhere on the reels and its job is to open a feature or pay a scatter prize. A wild stands in for another symbol to complete a line that would otherwise have missed, and it normally has to sit on a payline to do anything at all.

The Rule
Why wilds usually cannot replace scatters
Nearly every game blocks wild substitution for scatters. The reason is arithmetic rather than arbitrary: bonus rounds hold a large share of a scatter game’s return to player, and their frequency is tuned precisely. If wilds could complete a scatter trigger, features would fire far more often and the game’s maths would no longer hold.
A minority of games do allow it, usually as a headline feature, and they say so explicitly in the paytable. Treat it as the exception it is.
